1st December
Dear diary,
Today a man came to the door. He was funny looking. I think he was wearing a celery. Anyway, he was asking about house no. 13. He asked me if I found it odd that the numbering went 1-7 and then to 13. I honestly didn't notice it until now. He mentioned something about a "Low level perception filter" or something. He then thanked me and walked off. Who was he? Perhaps he was from the council?
The one with the celery was the fifth one I believe? -KS
Yes - O
2nd December
Dear diary,
The man came back today. He seemed a bit more forward today. He introduced himself as "The Doctor". I asked him what he was a Doctor of and he replied "This and that". He kept asking me questions about number 13. "How long has it been there? Was it here when you moved here? Has anyone gone in or out?" All very strange questions. I told him if he wanted to buy it he should speak to Mr Jameson at number 3. The Doctor nodded and left. That night I told Dad about him. Dad told me that he sounded like trouble and if he called again to not answer the door. But I'm going to. This "Doctor" is the most exciting thing to happen here for weeks.
2nd December
I woke up to some strange noises. I looked out of the window and the Doctor was in the garden of number 13 trying to get in through one of the back windows. After several attempts he gave up and left. Why is he so fascinated with that house?
Obviously something Alien - O
Yes Osgood, that was obvious. Well done. -KS
12th December
It's been nearly two weeks since I last saw the Doctor. He came back today. He knocked on the door but my Dad answered and rather coldly told him to go away. I slipped out of the back door and met the Doctor on the street.
"Why are you fascinated with that house" I asked.
"Because it's wrong. And wrong things interest me." he answered.
He then walked towards the house. I followed. He kept telling me to go home, but I didn't listen. He finally relented and let me tag along. He walked up to the door and pulled a small device from his pocket. He used it on the door and it opened. I asked him why he didn't use it before and he ignored the question. The inside of number 13 was dark and gloomy. There were cobwebs everywhere. Obviously no one had entered there in a long time. The Doctor pulled a torch from one of his pockets. He lit up the gloomy house.
"Stay close" he whispered "we have no idea what could be in here."
This spooked me, but I stuck close to him, placing a hand on his jacket. We crept up the stairs. Every noise we made was accentuated in the stillness. Finally the Doctor paused.
"Hear that?" There was a low whispering sound. It got louder. It was coming much closer.
"What is it?" I hissed.
"I don't know." he replied.
Whatever it was it was coming. The Doctor raised his small device. And then nothing. And then a little girl was stood in the hallway in front of us.
"Hello. Are you my mummy and daddy?" she asked. The Doctor lowered his device.
"No. We're not. Where are your mummy and daddy?".
The girl looked up at him.
"I don't know. I think the bad men got them."
The Doctor looked puzzled.
"The Bad men?" he asked.
"Yes the bad men. They come every night and take away the naughty people."
"The Naughty people?".
I was scared now.
"Yes the naughty people. The ones who try to leave. The bad men say we shouldn't leave. That we should stay here forever and ever. But that doesn't help. Sometimes you just fade away. Like nana. She just disappeared one day. No one knows where she went."
A low rumbling went through the house.
"The Bad Men are coming. You'd better run." and with that she vanished.
Me and the Doctor looked at each other. The rumbling increased.
"Run!" shouted the Doctor. We both sprinted down the stairs and slammed the door shut. The Doctor raised his device and I heard the lock click. We were safe. The Doctor turned to me.
"I need some time to figure this out. Promise me you won't go near that house unless I'm with you." I looked up at him.
"I promise." It was the first promise I meant.
Ooh that was really spooky. The Doctor is really brave sometimes. It was like reading a proper ghost story! - O
Osgood, we're supposed to be studying this diary not reading it like a novel. -KS
Yes. Sorry. -O
24th December
I need to write this down. I still can't believe it.
I almost couldn't sleep after the first journey into no 13. But the Doctor came back today. He told me he'd figured it out. I asked what it was. "The 'bad men' are Silors. Silors feed on sadness and depression. They keep their victims in an eternal loop of feeding and sadness. However, there is a way to defeat them. If we find the first victim and help them to move on, we can break the chain.
"So what are we waiting for?" I said "Let's do it!"
We dashed to no 13. The Doctor unlocked the door. We ventured once again into the house.
"How will we find the first victim?" I asked.
"It will usually be the one who is the most clear, and the one who looks the most alive."
I thought about it for a minute.
"You don't think it's the little girl do you?" I asked.
"I almost certainly think it's the little girl" he responded.
We headed upstairs to the hallway where we last saw the little girl. She was there.
"Hello again. The bad men are angry at you."
The Doctor walked up to her. "I imagine they are."
He kneeled down face to face with the girl.
"What do you remember about you mummy and daddy?"
She thought hard for a minute. "I remember that they were nice. And very lovely."
The Doctor smiled. "I imagine they were, and I imagine that they want to see you again." The Girl brightened up. "My mummy and daddy are still alive?!"
The Doctor paused. "No. But I'm sure they're waiting for you in whatever place lies beyond this one."
The girl looked at the Doctor. "Can I go see them?".
"You can go be with them forever. You just need to think. Find whatever is keeping you here... and let it go."
The rumbling started.
"Doctor!" I cried. "The Silors are coming!"
The Doctor nodded. He returned his attention to the girl.
"Keep thinking. Find it. Keep searching. Find it. Have you found it?"
The girl nodded. "Good. Let it go. Just imagine it as a string... and cut it. Let it go. Feel yourself drifting away..."
The girl started to cry. "I've done it. I'm floating away." She opened her eyes. "Thank you..." and she vanished. The rumbling stopped.
"Is that it? Are the Silors defeated?" The Doctor looked around.
"I imagine so." he said. "We cut off their food supply. Without it, they'll simply die out. We just saved the world."
We walked back to my house. I paused. "Doctor," I asked "Why was the house numbered 13?"
The Doctor thought for a moment. "I don't know. We could go back and ask the Silors before they die."
"No let's not!" I laughed. And stepped inside. I never saw him again.
Kate Stewart approves the request for transfer to the Black Archives. The Silor threat is still strong today and are the source of many famous ghost stories. This material is invaluable to the fight against them but in the wrong hands could be terribly dangerous.
