SECOND DOCTOR
"Hmm, no that's not quite right."
The Doctor was leaning under the TARDIS console with an assortment of tools around him. Jamie had no idea what he was trying to do, nor did he care. He just wanted to get out and do something. The TARDIS had been drifting through the time vortex for several days now. The Doctor's explanation for this varied day by day, although it always seemed to end in the words "Be quiet Jamie I'm busy". Finally, after what seemed like an age, the time rotor started moving again.
"You've fixed it!" Jamie cried.
The Doctor's head emerged.
"What? No. Hang on. That wasn't meant to happen." The Doctor began dashing around pushing several buttons on the TARDIS console. The TARDIS Materialisation sound echoed through the room.
"Emergency landing. Just so we don't drift away."
Jamie walked towards the TARDIS doors. He paused.
"Hang on, you mean you could have landed the TARDIS at any time over the past few days?" He asked.
The Doctor looked up.
"I could have done Jamie, but honestly I wouldn't have been able to work with a whole world out there to explore. Come on!" He pulled on his fur coat. "The engines will take a while to repair themselves! Let's see what's out there!"
Snow. There was Snow everywhere. The Doctor was nice and warm in his large fur coat. He turned to Jamie who still had his Kilt on.
"Don't you ever get cold legs?" He asked.
"No." Jamie lied.
They trudged through the snow for what felt like hours before Jamie saw something.
"Doctor look! I think it's a settlement!"
It was indeed a settlement. It was a very industrial looking settlement made up of large industrial complexes connected by various tunnels.
"Well then! Let's go say hello!" The Doctor cried and renewed his trudging.
The settlement was abandoned. They walked through the small settlement before reaching the largest part of the complex. The doors were shut.
"Should we knock?" Jamie offered.
"No need. I have this!" The Doctor pulled out his Sonic Screwdriver.
"Doctor, don't you think those doors are a bit... big for the Sonic?"
"What are you on about Jamie?"
"Well, the Sonic would have to be amazingly powerful to move these doors even an inch."
The Doctor walked up to the doors, Sonic in hand.
"I don't think that will work Doctor."
"Jamie, I think I know more about the limitations of the Sonic Screwdriver than you."
The Doctor raised the Sonic and it made its signature whirring sound. Nothing happened.
"Oh."
Several minutes passed while the Doctor considered the best way to open the doors, when suddenly, they opened. The Doctor grinned. He turned back to Jamie.
"I told you the Sonic would work!"
"Actually... I think you'll find I opened the doors. Now get inside quick, they'll be coming soon."
A woman was stood in the doorway. She had long blonde hair and she held a gun. The Doctor and Jamie slipped past her and she closed the doors behind her.
"Follow me." She whispered and led them further into the complex. Jamie looked around and noticed various decorations around the Complex.
"Doctor, I think it's Christmas."
"How long have you been in Cryo?" The woman asked. "It's Christmas Eve."
"This place seems a bit... empty for Christmas Eve doesn't it?" The Doctor queried.
"Well they're all in hiding aren't they?" The Woman snapped as if this was as obvious as the colour of the sky.
"In hiding? Hiding from what?" The Doctor asked intrigued.
"From the creatures. Where have you two been?" The Woman replied.
"Away." said the Doctor. "What are these creatures?"
"I don't know. We found them in the ice and before we knew it they attacked and started kill- wait. In here. Now. Quick!"
She pulled the Doctor and Jamie into what seemed like a security room. She signalled for them to be quiet and pulled down a small hatch which allowed them to see out into the room they had just been in. A door at the other side of the room opened and three creatures stepped in. Jamie recognised them immediately. Ice Warriors.
"Commander." hissed the first Ice Warrior. "I have picked up the ssscent of two humansss."
"How far isss it Private?" Asked the largest of the three, who was probably the commander.
"Not far... it'sss hard to tell... there'ssss another ssscent there asss well. It isss not human."
"Track them down Private. Kill the humansss and bring the non human for ssstudy."
The first Ice Warrior began to search around the room, opening doors. He was getting closer. The Doctor placed a hand on the Woman's and Jamie's shoulders.
"When I say run... run."
The Ice Warrior pulled open the door and before he could react the Doctor shouted "RUN!" and the three of them barrelled past the Ice Warrior and barged past the remaining two Ice Warriors, leaving all three hissing furiously behind them. They continued running along various corrdiors, the Doctor leading the way.
"Doctor! Do you know where you're going!" Shouted Jamie.
"Ah. No." Replied the Doctor.
"Follow me!" Shouted the woman taking a right turn.
"Where are you leading us?" Shouted Jamie.
"Just shut up and follow me!" The Woman replied.
They reached a large sealed door. The Woman rapped four times.
"It's me, Alison. Open up."
The Door opened and a young man stood there, relief flooding his face.
"My god Alison. We thought they'd got you. Did you get any food?"
"No. But I picked up two more survivors. "
"Great. More mouths to feed." The man eyed the Doctor and Jamie's attire. "You come from a fancy dress party or something?"
The Doctor ignored him and they made their way inside. A large group of men, women and children were huddled in the large space. A desk was in the middle of the room. The Doctor sat down on it and looked round at the faces around him.
"Right then. Who's going to tell me about the Ice Warriors?"
"It started a few days ago." The Woman, Alison began. "We were drilling into the Ice Pack and then we hit something. The next thing we know, those creatures emerged and began attacking everyone."
"Of course." The Doctor nodded. "The Ice Warriors must have crashed here and frozen in the ice. Your drill must have hit it and freed them. And the Ice Warriors sensed a threat and began attacking due to Martian Law."
"Martian Law?" Asked Alison.
"Yes. The ancient code of the Ice Warriors. 'Harm one of us and you harm all of us'. To them, all your lives are forfeit under Martian Law."
"So." Jamie began. "What's the plan Doctor?"
"Well," The Doctor clapped his hands together, "First, you and some of the lads here will go out and distract the Ice Warriors. Second, the lovely Alison will lead me to the Ice Pack. Third, I reason with their Commander and convince them it's a misunderstanding. Fourth, I do something extremely clever and free the Ice Warrior ship allowing them to leave in peace."
Jamie raised his eyebrows.
"You think that will really work?"
The Doctor shrugged.
"It's Christmas. I've got to ask for something."
The Doctor nodded at Jamie who, with a large group of men, veered off making lots of noise. Alison gestured and she and the Doctor ran off. They eventually reached the ice pack. Alison ran over to a computer and read the readout.
"The Ship is still there."
The Doctor nodded. He considered what to do next when he heard a tell tale hissing behind him.
"I knew you would realise the ruse and come straight here. So I've come for a little chat if that's alright?"
The Ice Warrior Commander didn't respond. The Doctor took that to mean 'say your piece before I destroy you'.
"There's been a misunderstanding. The humans were drilling and didn't know your ship was there. They didn't mean to attack you."
"It matterssss not. Thessse humansss are forfeit under Martian Law. Harm one of usss and you harm all of usss." Hissed the Ice Warrior.
"But... none of your soldiers were injured, am I correct?"
"Yessss...."
"So... none of you were harmed. Thus these humans have not broken Martian Law, thus you cannot harm them."
The Commander paused. He saw the logic in the Doctor's words.
"Right then," The Doctor smiled, "Call of your soldiers. I can free your ship from the ice and you can leave in peace with no further bloodshed."
The Commander smiled. But it was not a warm smile.
"Very well. Free our Ssship and I will call off the attack. But... fail to do ssso and the humansss will all die. You have ten minutesss."
The Doctor pulled out his recorder.
"Very well. I think I know the right frequency." The Doctor began to play. The music grew steadily louder. Eventually, Alison had to cover her ears. Large cracks began to appear in the ice and it began to steadily began to fall away, revealing the Ice Warrior Ship. The Commander hissed with pleasure.
Alison turned to the Doctor.
"Any questions?" He asked. "I simply played at the right pitch to shatter the ice. Rather easy really."
"I got that" she said. "Were you playing Jingle Bells?"
The Doctor grinned.
The Doctor, Jamie and Alison watched the Ice Warrior ship depart.
"Well. That's that sorted. And I think the TARDIS has had enough time to repair itself. Alison. Considering I just saved your entire settlement... I think I deserve a lift?"
Some time later, Alison pulled the Snowmobile over and the Doctor and Jamie disembarked. The Doctor walked over to the TARDIS and opened the doors.
"Ah! All repaired. Lovely."
He turned to Alison.
"This will be goodbye Alison. Merry Christmas."
"Merry Christmas." She replied.
"Merry Christmas!" Shouted Jamie and entered the TARDIS.
"Hang on!" Shouted Alison. The Doctor turned.
"I never got your name." She pointed out.
"Oh!" The Doctor seemed surprised. "I'm the Doctor." He grinned and entered the TARDIS.
Alison walked away but paused. She turned back.
"Doctor Who?"
But the Police Box had already gone.
The Doctor was leaning under the TARDIS console with an assortment of tools around him. Jamie had no idea what he was trying to do, nor did he care. He just wanted to get out and do something.
